Mustangs earn third Class A title; Eden Prairie wins Class AA honors
On the 65th anniversary of the State Boys’ Hockey Tournament, two new champions emerged. The Breck Mustangs earned their first title since their 2004 championship appearance. In their fifth appearance, and first since 2003, the Eden Prairie Eagles won their first boys’ hockey championship.
Class A The Breck School of Golden Valley, the No. 4 seed, upset No. 3 seed Warroad 7-3 to clinch the 2009 Class A title. The impression in the first period was that the game was going to be a close one. After the first period the game was tied 2-2. Breck then scored three consecutive goals to give the Mustangs the edge in the second period. Warroad senior Dane Shaugabay answered with a third-period goal to cut the margin to two. Breck scored two empty-net goals to clinch their third title in school history. Breck goalie John Russell, a junior, had 33 saves in the game. He finished the tournament with 77 saves – giving him a 95.06 save percentage. The game was a rematch of the 2000 championship game – another game in which Breck took home the championship hardware, winning that one by a score of 3-2.
Warroad defeated Hutchinson 7-1 in quarterfinal play and beat St. Cloud Cathedral 5-3 in the semifinal game. Breck defeated Rochester Lourdes 3-0 and Little Falls 6-1 to advance. The Warriors finished their season 28-3. Breck finished the 27-3-1.
Third-place medals were awarded to the Little Falls Flyers who defeated St. Cloud Cathedral 4-3. St. Cloud Cathedral scored first with three consecutive goals off the stick of junior forward Jordan Palusky – all in the first period. The flyers responded with four unanswered goals in the final two periods of the game. The game-winning goal came off the stick of senior Ben Hanowski with only 22 seconds left in the third period. This goal was Hanowski’s second of the game and seventh of the tournament. The Flyers suffered their only loss of the season to Breck in the semifinal round of the tournament and finished their season 30-1-0. St. Cloud Cathedral finished 26-4-1.
Rochester Lourdes (22-8) won the Class A Consolation trophy with a 3-1 victory over Hutchinson. The Eagles turned a clear 42-to-12 advantage in shots into three goals and the win. Seniors Taylor Funk, Cole Peterson with his third of the tourney, and Nick Wylum each had had a goal for the Eagles. Tiger goalie junior Zak Swenson kept his team close with 39 saves. Hutchinson finished the year with a 20-9-1 record.
Class AA The Eden Prairie Eagles shut out the Moorhead Spuds 3-0 to claim their first championship trophy. Junior Mitch Rogge, senior Nick Leddy and sophomore Dan Molenaar each scored a goal to lead Eden Prairie to the victory. Sophomore goalie Andrew Ford had 28 saves in his shutout for the Eagles, giving him a tournament total of 61. The loss was the seventh runner-up finish for Moorhead. The Spuds upset No. 1 seed Edina 5-2 and Cretin-Derham Hall 2-1 before meeting Eden Prairie in the title game. Eden Prairie defeated Hill-Murray 3-2 in overtime in quarterfinal play and defeated Blaine 4-2 in the semifinal game. The Eagles finished their season 28-3-0. The Spuds finished 17-10-3.
In their fourth consecutive appearance, the Blaine Bengals earned the third-place trophy after defeating Cretin-Derham Hall 3-1. The Raiders netted the first goal, which was followed up with three unanswered goals by Blaine. All three goals came within two minutes and 20 seconds of each other. Cretin-Derham Hall goalie Ben Walsh was credited with 32 saves in the game and 89 in the tournament. Blaine finished the season 26-4-1. Cretin-Derham Hall finished 21-9-1.
Edina senior Marshall Everson scored four times and senior linemates Connor Gaarder, with one goal and three assists, and Anders Lee, with four assists, paced Edina (26-5) over Hill-Murray (19-11-1) 5-2 in the consolation championship. Everson’s four goals along with three in the semifinals game give him seven for the tournament. Lee completed tournament play with nine total points on one goal and eight assists. Gaarder contributed one goal and had five assists in his team’s three games. Edina scored in each period of play; leading 2-1 after one, and 3-1 after two periods. Both teams were 1-for-5 on the power play. The Hornets had the advantage in shots on goal, 26-16.
For the sixth consecutive year, the Herb Brooks Award was given to the most qualified hockey player in each class of the state tournament who strongly represented the values, characteristics and traits that defined Herb Brooks. This year’s recipients were senior Riley Hirsch of Little Falls and senior Trent Johnson of Moorhead.
The 2009 State Boys’ Hockey Tournament was held March 11-14 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Consolation games for both classes were played at Mariucci Arena on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.
