2018 Speech

Weather Update - The weekend blizzard has created a unique situation for sections and changed our preparation a bit for State. 2 Sections will be going on Monday and one on Tuesday. The schedule and speaking order will be set and posted online on Wednesday once everyone has qualified. It is a tighter turnaround than we are used to so we appreciate everyone's patience and willingness to be flexible.
Activity Administration:

  • Speech currently has no limitations on Start Date, First Contest Date, or Maximum Number of Contests. We encourage schools to create a schedule that works best for coaches and students. The Speech season can overlap with One Act Play, Music Contests, and winter sports and we encourage coaches/directors work with each other to give kids the opportunity to participate in multiple interests.
  •
  • The MSHSL Speech begins at sub-section. Regular season contests and invitationals do not need to meet the same requirements for registered judges or need to follow the MSHSL rules, although encouraged for consistency.
  • Speech students are not bound by Bylaw 111 (Transfer and Residence)
  • Administrators need to verify student eligibility, but currently do not need to fill out the Eligibility Verification Form.
  • Judging:

  • All Sub-Section, Section and State Contests require MSHSL registered judges. For more information on being a judge, click here.
  •
  • Current Judging Certification Clinics will be posted on this page under NEWS.
  •
  • Having qualified judges is important to the integrity of the contests. It is getting harder and harder to get out of school to judge contests and Spring is such a busy time that sometimes contests need to be scheduled on weekdays. If it helps, we have a letter of support you could give your administration to participate in weekday contests.
  • Current Rules::

  • Current Rules and Policies are posted accessible from this page. See Rules and Policies link below.
