2010 One Act Play Festival

Three Class AA, two Class A productions rated “starred performances”

Casts and crews from 16 high schools took to the stage at O’Shaughnessy Auditorium on the St. Catherine University campus in St. Paul On Feb. 11 and 12 during the 2010 State One Act Play Festival. After watching, listening, and then individually critiquing the 16 dramatic productions, panels of judges, rated five of them “starred performances,” three in Class AA and two in Class A.

The three Class AA schools whose productions were cited for “starred performances” were (in order of performance): Eastview of Apple Valley for Agnes of God, Minnetonka for Patient A, and Eagan for Aftermath. The two Class A schools whose productions were cited for “starred performances” were (in order of performance) Park Rapids Area for The Whole Shebang and Pipestone Area for The Serpent.

The other participating Class AA schools, whose plays were performed on Feb. 11, were Anoka, Cambridge-Isanti, Centennial of Circle Pines, New Ulm and Sartell-St. Stephen. The other participating Class A schools, whose plays were performed on Feb. 12, were Bagley, East Central of Finlayson, Foley, Mora, St. Charles, and St. Peter.

Representing Section 1, Eastview’s “starred performance” of Agnes of God by John Pielmeier was directed by Scott Durocher and Assistant Director Rob Rachow. This was the sixth appearance and sixth “starred performance” rating for Eastview, located in Apple Valley. In this production Dr. Martha Livingstone, a court-appointed psychiatrist, is charged with assessing the sanity of a young Catholic novitiate accused of murdering her newborn. Miriam Ruth, the Mother Superior, keeps young Agnes from the doctor, arousing Livingstone's suspicions further. Who killed the infant and who fathered the tiny victim? Livingstone's questions force all three women to re-examine the meaning of faith and the power of love. Cast members were Taylor Misiak, Amanda Taylor, Sarah Cartwright, and Nita Chai. Support personnel were Jacob Chicos, Brittany Eng, Kaelin Hall, Shannon Hanson, Chloe Hille, Roman Johnson, Brock Knutson, Vicki Luse, Brian Patten, Maddy Settle, Lexi Roberts, Josiah Russell, Siiri Russell, and Austin Truskowski. The previous top performances came in 1998, 2002, ’03, ’07 and ’09.

Representing Section 6, Minnetonka’s “starred performance” of Patient A by Lee Blessing was directed by R. Kent Knutson and Assistant Director Bryce Larson. Minnetonka was making its sixth appearance and earned its sixth “starred” rating. In this play Blessing explores the experience of Kimberly Bergalis, whose case marked the first known instance of HIV transmission from a health care worker to patient. Issues of testing, discrimination and personal responsibility are examined against a larger backdrop of the AIDS epidemic in America and the world; coupled with the issues of faith — where we place it and how it comforts us and gives us strength. Cast members were Nate Irvin, Katelin DeLorenzo, Ryan McCartan, Heather Oas, Jacob Fazzio, Devan Barlow, and Grant Ruckheim. Support personnel were Becca Hanson, Jennifer Leone, Simon Wentzell, Josh Swenson, Griffin Dooling, Phil Holt, Kayla Kallman, Emily Jordano, Troy Goemer, and Hayden Rendos. Minnetonka earned previous top ratings in 1969, 2003, ’06, ’08, and ’09.

Representing Section 3, Eagan’s “starred performance” of Aftermath by Erik Jensen and Jessica Blank was directed by Nancy Owzarek. Playwrights Erik Jensen and Jessica Blank traveled to the country of Jordan in the summer of 2008 to interview Iraqi refugees displaced by the war. The result is Aftermath, a documentary-drama in which 95 percent of the script is verbatim text from their interviews. The characters in the play take turns telling how their lives have been forever altered since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. Arabic is spoken throughout the play, giving the illusion that the characters are speaking in their native language. Cast members were Codi Soeun, Adam Hussein, Jordan Oxborough, Lauren Draves, Micaela Johnston, Javier Ferreira, and Arnesh Roy. Support personnel were Laura Vollumth, Lyndsey Schrader, John Pollock, Chris Junod, Lauren Welle, Lauren Schiltz, Olivia Gardner, Ali Gates, and Elizabeth Olsen. Eagan was making its 16th appearance and earned its 14th “starred” rating. The school’s previous top ratings came in 1992-98, 2000, ’01, and ’05-’08.

Representing Section 6, Park Rapids Area’s “starred performance” of The Whole Shebang earned the school its 12th “starred performance” rating in its 25th appearance. Park Rapids Area earned its previous top ratings in 1972, ’75, ’76, ’78, ’79, 1982, 1991, ’93, ’94, 2000, and ’09. The play was written by Rich Orloff and was directed by Juliann Kjenaas, assisted by Technical Director Jonathan Harrison.
