St. Croix Lutheran, Buffalo race to first team titles; Two Class A records set
The St. Croix Lutheran Crusaders (Class A) and the Buffalo Bison (Class AA) both won their first titles at this year’s State Track & Field Meet. The Crusaders finished 11 points ahead of the runners-up from Brooklyn Center, and the Bison placed eight points ahead of the second-place team from Wayzata.
Two new Class A records were set in the preliminaries. Frazee senior Skyler Jackson and Jordan senior Cameron Boy raced to a record time of 10.81 in the 100-meter dash, but Jackson won when the time was broken down to 10.803. Boy came back later in the day and set the new standard in the 200-meter dash at 21.62.
Class A St. Croix Lutheran of West St. Paul improved on its 2008 third-place showing and won its first title at the 2009 meet. The Crusaders had 45 points and the runners-up from Brooklyn Center had 34. The co-op of Lac qui Parle Valley of Madison and Dawson-Boyd placed third with 31 points.
The 4x100 relay team consisting of junior Tyler Koester and seniors Ben Gavin, Michael Roeller, and Aaron Hulsebus, gave the Crusaders their only first-place finish. It was also the third consecutive year the Crusaders won this relay, with Hulsebus and Koester competing on all three teams.
St. Croix Lutheran also placed teams in two additional relays. The 4x200 team made up of Hulsebus, Roeller, Gavin, and junior James Walker earned runner-up honors, and the 4x400 team placed sixth. That team consisted of Walker, Gavin, and juniors Jeffrey Dubose and Chet Lander.
In the individual events, Walker placed third in the high jump and Dubose finished fourth in the pole vault. Aaron Hulsebus earned the final points for St. Croix Lutheran with a fifth-place showing in the 100-meter dash.
Two individuals and one additional relay team were successful in defending their 2008 titles. The Panthers of Glencoe-Silver Lake claimed their third consecutive crown in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:30.87. Senior Kyle O’Donnell competed all three years, with eighth-grader Ryan Kuester, junior Luke Alsleben, and senior Cole Lightfoot, completing this year’s team.
Seniors Skyler Jackson of Frazee and Cameron Boy of Jordan also won their second gold medals. Jackson repeated as champion in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.16 and Boy won his second title in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.25.
Jackson and Boy also staged an epic battle in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash. They both set a new Class A record of 10.81, but after going to thousandths of a second, Jackson edged Boy with his time of 10.803. Boy finished at 10.806. Jackson and Isaac Anderson of The Blake School of Minneapolis had shared the previous record of 10.94.
Boy bounced back, however, and set his own Class A record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.62. Adam Freed of Marshall School of Duluth set the previous record of 21.85 in 1996. Two competitors won two titles apiece at the 2009 meet: senior Moses Hoeppner of Warroad won the 800- and 1600-meter runs, and senior Laquone Robinson of Brooklyn Center won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.
Class AA In Class AA, the Buffalo Bison won their first team title with 60 points. The Bison, who tied for sixth place last year, finished eight points ahead of the runners-up from Wayzata. The defending champions from Rosemount slipped to third place with 49 points.
Senior Zachary Mellon paced Buffalo in three events. He anchored the 4x400 relay team that took top honors and the 4x800 team that placed second. Sophomore Timothy Ernster and seniors Kaleb Stevens and Taylor Vick rounded out the 4x400 team, and senior Kevin Hayes, junior Nick Teetzel, and sophomore Joshua Wedemeier completed the 4x800 team.
The Bison also placed fourth in the 4x200 relay. That team was made up of Taylor Vick, Timothy Ernster, Kaleb Stevens, and sophomore Jerome Begin.
Mellon, who set a new Class AA and all-time record in the 800-meter run last year (1:49.69), placed second in that event this year. Fridley senior Harun Abda took top honors with a time of 1:52.23 to Mellon’s 1:52.63.
Senior Keenen Stangl and Jerome Begin earned the remainder of Buffalo’s points. Stangl won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.73 and Begin placed second in the 300-meter hurdles. Chaska senior Derek Jerde and Owatonna senior Casey Dehn were the only competitors to successfully defend their 2008 titles. Jerde won his second consecutive crown the high jump and Dehn repeated in both the shot put and the discus. Dehn was also the only competitor to win multiple titles this year.
No new records were set in Class AA this year.
