2009 State Girls' Volleyball Tournament

Bethlehem Academy wins fourth Class A title; Marshall claims third Class AA crown;
Shakopee wins third consecutive Class AAA championship



Class A
The Cardinals of Bethlehem Academy improved on last year’s runner-up showing to win their fourth Class A crown. This was the eighth consecutive and overall appearance for the Cardinals, and they have been in the championship game every year. In addition to this year, they also won championships in 2003, 2005, and 2007. This year, Bethlehem Academy defeated Minneota 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-17) for the Class A crown.

Holly Hafemeyer led Bethlehem Academy with 31 kills and Jena Budde added a team-high 46 assists. Victoria Nass and Payton Schultz had 19 and 11 digs, respectively for the Cardinals. Ashlynn Muhl paced Minneota with nine kills, and Kelsey Hennen and Leah Fadness each added 13 digs for the Vikings.

Meadow Creek Christian of Andover claimed third-place honors after beating Lake of the Woods of Baudette 3-2 (25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 25-27, 16-14).Kelly Strandlund and Lauren Sutherland both had 15 kills for the Saints, and Strandlund also added a team-high 15 digs. Steph Rohwer added 45 assists for Meadow Creek Christian. Ashley Feldman had 20 kills for Lake of the Wood and Jessica Marken added 44 assists.

In a battle of first-time qualifiers, Nevis took home the consolation hardware after defeating Parkers Prairie 3-2 (25-19, 25-17, 17-25, 24-26, 18-16). Amanda Allman had 49 assists for Nevis, Betsy Hjelseth added 29 digs, and Riley Hanson had 27 kills. Sari Noga led Parkers Prairie with 22 kills and she also had 21 digs.

Class AA
In Class AA, the Marshall Tigers won their third title after defeating Delano 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-18). The Tigers placed second in 2008, but won previous championships in 2004 and 2007.

Dani Beekman of Marshall had a team-high 11 kills and 13 digs. Kayla Wallerich had 20 assists and Kelsey Deragisch added another 13. Kayla Koenecke of Delano led her squad with 17 kills. Molly Kreklow had 17 assists for Delano and Rhea Ylitalo had a team-high 12 digs.

The Giants of LeSueur-Henderson defeated the Hibbing Bluejackets 3-0 (25-12, 27-25, 25-15) to earn third-place honors. Kaitlyn Braun and Kim Kuechle each had nine kills for the Giants, and Shelly Blaschko added a team-high 30 assists. Tayler Kahlow and Braun also had nine digs apiece for LeSueur-Henderson. Kate Lange led Hibbing with 14 kills and Courtney Wirtanen added 18 assists.

The Wolverines of Wadena-Deer Creek took consolation honors after defeating Byron 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 23-25, 25-21). The win was an improvement for the Wolverines, who lost in the consolation semifinals last year. This year, Brittney Noon notched 22 kills for Wadena-Deer Creek, and Courtney Volkmann added 37 assists. Hope Theisen added a team-high 20 digs for the Wolverines. Brittlyn Olson paced the Byron Bears with 11 kills and 17 digs.

Class AAA
The Sabers of Shakopee won their third consecutive title in their third appearance. This year, they defeated Wayzata 3-1 (25-8, 24-26, 25-8, 25-14) in the championship match-up.

Ashley Wittman paced Shakopee with 34 kills and 19 digs, and Megan Westlund had a team-high 24 assists. Jessica Kegel led Wayzata with 10 kills and Julia Doyle added 29 assists.

The Burnsville Blaze took third-place honors after beating Stillwater Area 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22). Tori Dixon led the Blaze with 21 kills and she also added 10 digs. Abby Olson had a team-high 32 assists, and Camille Benson and Alli Butler both had 15 digs apiece. Emily McDonough had 11 kills for Stillwater Area, and Kayla Zeno led the Ponies with 20 assists and 12 digs.

The Andover Huskies, who placed fourth in 2008, earned consolation honors this year. They defeated Farmington 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-19). Jenna McNallan led the Huskies with 15 kills and Karlie Hauer added another 14. Nicole Husfeldt had a team-high 46 assists for Andover, and Erica Turner added 19 digs. Danielle Dombeck and Katie Habeck had 16 and 13 kills, respectively, for Farmington.
