2009 State Girls' Dance Team High Kick Tournament

St. Cloud Cathedral only team to defend title;
Cannon Falls earns fourth in five years;
Eastview wins fourth in six years
St. Cloud Cathedral was the only 2008 champion to successfully defend its title in the High Kick Division. The Crusaderettes won their third Class AA championship. Their first came in 2005. Faribault finished second, moving up one position from the team’s 2008 finish. Totino-Grace of Fridley was third, followed by Benilde-St. Margaret’s of St. Louis Park in fourth, Academy of Holy Angels of Richfield was fifth, and Spring Lake Park was sixth.
Defending champion Yellow Medicine East of Granite Falls yielded to Cannon Falls in the Class A competition. The Cannon Falls Bomber Dance Team earned its fourth state title since 2005. Aitkin earned the runner-up trophy while the Silhouettes of Yellow Medicine East settled for third. Lac qui Parle Valley of Madison finished fourth, followed by Lake City in fifth, and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop was sixth.
Eastview of Apple Valley won its fourth Class AAA championship in six years. Faribault, now in Class AA, won in 2005 and Burnsville won in 2008. Otherwise it has been the Lightning Dance Team of Eastview every year since 2004. Maple Grove finished second and Eden Prairie was third. Defending champion Burnsville fell to fourth, Brainerd was fifth, and Chaska was sixth.
Judges observe the routines and award points on a 100-point scale. Judging criteria are subdivided into four categories. Unique to this division is the Kicks category. The judges look for straight backs and legs, pointed feet, uniform height and place of kicks, level hips, foot placement, and arm connections. The three categories of criteria common also to the Jazz Divisions are: 1) Presentation; 2) Execution; and 3) Choreography.
Three All-Tournament Teams were also selected. Each of the six teams that placed in each class named two dancers for the honor.
The High Kick Division competition of the 2009 State Girls’ Dance Team Tournament took place Feb. 13 at Target Center in Minneapolis.
