2009 State Girls' Dance Team Jazz Tournament

Marshall School defends title, third in a row;
Benilde-St. Margaret’s repeats for fourth title;
Wayzata claims fourth championship

The Marshall School of Duluth and Benilde-St. Margaret’s of St. Louis Park successfully defended their titles in the Jazz Division of the 2009 State Girls’ Dance Team Tournament. The Divas of Marshall School made it a three-peat, while the Knightettes of Benilde-St. Margaret’s win was its fourth dating back to 1999. The Jazz Division competition was conducted on Feb. 14 at Target Center in Minneapolis.

The Divas of Marshall School, Duluth, succeeded in making it three in a row in the Class A competition. BOLD of Olivia finished second for the third straight year. Cannon Falls finished third, followed by Yellow Medicine East of Granite Falls in fourth. Frazee was fifth and Zumbrota-Mazeppa finished sixth.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s of St. Louis Park won its second consecutive and fourth overall championship in Class AA. The Knightettes’ previous titles came in a tie with Waconia in 1999 and solely in 2004. Totino-Grace of Fridley finished second for the third consecutive year. Spring Lake Park, the 2007 champion, finished third for the second straight year. St. Cloud Cathedral was fourth, just as was the case last year. Sartell-St. Stephen finished fifth for the second straight year, and Academy of Holy Angels of Richfield finished sixth.

Wayzata won its third title in four years in Class AAA. It was the fourth overall championship for the Crimson Connection. The team’s first title came in 1993, the first year that Jazz competition was added to the tournament. Defending champion Maple Grove had to settle for second. Eastview of Apple Valley took third place, Eden Prairie finished fourth, Mounds View was fifth, and Blaine was sixth.

Judges observe the routines and award points on a 100-point scale. Judging criteria are subdivided into four categories. The three categories of criteria common also to the High Kick Division are: 1) Presentation; 2) Execution; and 3) Choreography. The fourth category, unique to the Jazz Division, requires judges to look for rotation timing and completion, posture, difficulty of skills, and flexibility movements.

Three All-Tournament Teams were also selected. Each of the six teams placing in each class named two dancers for the honor.
