State Tournament Summary

Wayzata (18-0-5) earned its fifth state championship in the school’s 21st tournament appearance with what many might call an upset 2-1 victory over Woodbury (21-1-1). Woodbury, the defending champion, No. 1 seed and rated No. 1 nationally by a coaches group, peppered the goal with eight shots in the first half, but Wayzata junior goalkeeper Megan Pyrz turned away all five that were actually on net. Wayzata, the No. 3 seed, on the other hand took only two shots, both on goal, and both were saved by Woodbury senior goalkeeper Brittany Cygan. The first half was a scoreless tie. Wayzata scored first in the second half at 48:11. Senior forward Samantha Curtiss put a shot into the goal box that Cygan bobbled and the miscue fell to the feet of senior midfielder Erin Krause who softly tapped it into the back of the net. Woodbury senior midfielder Caitlin Graboski was awarded a penalty kick at 57:37 after a Wayzata foul inside the box and she scored with her shot to tie the match. The Trojans took the lead at 68:29 on a goal by junior forward Taylor Wodnick, assisted by senior forward Nora Christensen, and held it. Pyrz was credited with six saves in the game and two saves were made by her teammates.
