State Tournament Summary

Evan DeCovich of Eastview (23-4) threw a two-hit shutout, and scored the only run of the game, to lead the Lightning to a 1-0 victory over Bemidji(25-3) in the Class AAA Championship game. DeCovich struck out five and walked only one while earning his eighth win of the season against two losses. The Lightning got the sole run when DeCovich led off the second with a double, Patrick Strey sacrificed him to third. DeCovich scored as AJ Stockwell grounded out to shortstop. Eastview had another scoring threat in the fourth thwarted when with Cameron Hall on third base and just one out, Chris Narum hit a ball near the line in right field. Lumberjack right fielder Sam Dwyer made the catch and then threw a strike to catcher Collin Leif who put the tag on Hall for an inning ending double play. Bemidji had only one player get to third base; it was Dwyer with two out in the sixth, but Mitch Hendricks flew out to right ending the inning. Cody Rutledge and Mason Bellew had the only two hits off DeCovich. Eastview had four hits, DeCovich got two, Hall and Quinn Trusty had the others. Lumberjack pitcher Ryan Hirt suffered his first loss of the season, finishing 10-1. The two teams combined left only four men on base, each having two.
Today’s championship games were all won by shutouts. It was the first time since the tournament went to three classes in 2000 that this occurred. The last time all games were shutouts was 1984, when there were two classes.
Attendance for the day at Target Field was 5,450.
