Top-seeded Mankato East turned aside upset-minded Cretin-Derham Hall in a 7-6 victory in 10 innings in the Class AAA semifinals during the Minnesota State High School League's Softball State Tournament at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
The Cougars ended the three-hour game by manufacturing a run in the top of the 10th inning on one hit and two Cretin-Derham Hall errors. Mankato East nearly broke the game open in the top of the eighth inning, but some defensive heroics saved Cretin-Derham Hall.
Mankato East had runners on second and third with two outs. Junior catcher Destiny Reasner sent a high fly to deep center field that looked like a sure home run. But using perfect timing, Cretin-Derham Hall junior center fielder Samantha Haider lunged to make a stellar catch while crashing into the fence. The panel of the fence broke away and had to be replaced which created a delay.
Junior first baseman Hailey Petzel had two hits three RBIs for the Cougars. Sophomore pitcher Brooke Nesdahl and freshman infielder Allie Castro had three hits each for Cretin-Derham Hall.
