Sartell captures fifth consecutive High Kick title

While the state tournament had a different feel this year with limited spectators in a new venue, the excitement on the floor was the same as in years past. Six champions were crowned over two days, with Sartell leading the way with a fifth consecutive title in Class AA High Kick. The Sabres also earned their first championship in Class AA Jazz.
This year’s tournament was held March 12-13 at Edina High School.
Jazz
Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd and Eastview of Apple Valley defended their Jazz titles at the 2021 tournament. The Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd Shadows claimed their third championship in Class A. In Class AAA, Eastview of Apple Valley won its second consecutive title.
The co-op of Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd earned its third consecutive and overall championship. Yellow Medicine East of Granite Falls was second and Holy Family Catholic of Victoria placed third. Zumbrota-Mazeppa was fourth, Frazee placed fifth, and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton was sixth.
Sartell won its first Jazz championship in Class AA. The victory was an improvement for the Sabres, who earned runner-up honors in 2020. Benilde-St. Margaret’s of St. Louis Park placed second and Orono followed in third. Mound Westonka danced to a fourth-place showing and St. Cloud Cathedral placed fifth. Simley of Inver Grove Heights rounded out the finalist field with a sixth-place showing.
Eastview claimed its second consecutive title and sixth overall. In addition to the past two years, the Lightning also won in 2000, 2014, 2016, and 2017. Maple Grove placed second this year and Wayzata took third. Edina finished fourth, Lakeville North was fifth, and Blaine placed sixth.
High Kick
All three 2020 champions successfully defended their Hick Kick titles at the 2021 tournament. Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd won in Class A, Sartell captured top honors in Class AA, and Eastview continued its reign in Class AAA.
The Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd Shadows earned their third consecutive and overall High Kick crown. Yellow Medicine East of Granite Falls was second and Bagley was third. Cannon Falls placed fourth, Holy Family Catholic was fifth, and Lake City placed sixth.
In Class AA, Sartell-St. Stephen claimed its fifth consecutive championship and seventh overall. In addition to the past five years, the Sabres also won in 2011 and 2015. Austin claimed runner-up honors. Faribault placed third this year and Mound Westonka finished fourth. Benilde-St. Margaret’s and St. Cloud Cathedral rounded out the finalists, placing fifth and sixth, respectively.
Eastview danced away with its second consecutive and 13th overall High Kick crown. The Lightning won previously in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Wayzata placed second, Brainerd was third, and Chaska finished fourth. Lakeville North earned fifth-place honors and Eden Prairie placed sixth.
