2023 Girls Lacrosse State Tournament Day 1 Recap

Four girls’ lacrosse quarterfinals were played at White Bear Lake Area High School on Tuesday June 13 and the semifinal field is set for Thursday, June 15. No. 3 Stillwater Area will take on No. 2 Edina and No. 5 Benilde-St. Margaret’s will face off against top-seeded Lakeville South.
Lakeville South is looking for its second consecutive championship while Benilde-St. Margaret’s is hoping to improve on last year’s third-place showing. The Cougars and Red Knights met early in early May this year, with Lakeville South winning 16-9.
Edina is making its first tournament appearance and Stillwater Area fell in the consolation semifinals in 2022. The Ponies defeated the Hornets 12-11 in overtime in this year’s regular-season finale.
No. 3 seed Stillwater Area used balanced scored to defeat East Ridge 13-7 in the first quarterfinal. Junior Maycie Neubauer paced the Ponies’ offense with three goals and three assists. Senior Ellie Fisher and juniors Myah Krueger and Crimson Keykal added two goals apiece.
Edina, the No. 2 seed, got three goals apiece from three different players as the Hornets cruised to a 13-5 victory over Champlin Park. Seniors Mary Velner and Nicola Santoni totaled three goals and two assists each and junior Mia Maxwell added three goals and one assist.
In the third match-up of the day, No. 5 Benilde-St. Margaret’s again defeated No. 4 Chanhassen 17-6. Sophomore Charlize Vang and junior Karsyn Elliott tallied three goals apiece for the Red Knights. Sophomore Bailey Gray added two goals and five assists.
The defending champions from Lakeville South dismissed Elk River/Zimmerman 19-9 in the final quarterfinal of the day. Senior Emily Moes paced the top-seeded Cougar with six goals and two assists. Junior Sivanna O’Brien added five goals and one assist.
