2023 Tennis Team State Championships Singles and Doubles Recap

Edina senior Matthew Fullerton came into the 2023 state tennis singles competition with a single goal in mind: win a second consecutive state title.
Fullerton got the job done Friday. After losing the first set Thursday in the first of his four matches in the tournament, he swept his way into the Class 2A championship match, where he defeated Edina’s Nolan Ranger 2-6, 6-3, 3-1 (retired).
In the Class AA doubles competition, the Blake team of Kai Chen and Andrew Richardson defeated Jack Allaben and Brandon Pham of Mahtomedi in the finals.
In Class A, Marjan Veldic of Rochester Lourdes, who placed second in singles a year ago, reached the highest rung of the competition with a 6-3, 6-4 win over defending champion Evan Fraser of Mounds Park Academy in the championship match. Veldic lost only one set during the singles tournament, defeating Zahir Hassan of St. Paul Academy & Summit School 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.
In the Class A doubles championship match, Leo Benson and Maik Nguyen of St. Paul Academy & Summit School defeated the Litchfield duo of Alex Draeger and Braden Olson 6-3, 6-1. Benson and Nguyen did not lose a set during the tournament, sweeping all four matches.
The Class AA tournament was played at Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus and the Class A event was held at Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in South Minneapolis.
