There was a feeling of déjà vu on Wednesday, June 5 during the Minnesota State High School League’s Boys Tennis State Tournament. That came after a successful repeat of team championships by top-seeded Wayzata and St. Paul Academy, respectively. In 1993, Wayzata and St. Paul Academy were state champions in their respective enrollment classes.

Wayzata captured the Class AA championship for the second consecutive season with a 5-2 victory over No. 2 Rochester Mayo at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus. It is also the second consecutive year that Wayzata defeated Rochester Mayo with a state title on the line. It is the sixth team title overall for Wayzata, which finished the season 19-0.

The Trojans’ strong doubles lineup paved the way with three victories in the match. The clinching point for Wayzata, however, came when eighth-grader Shreyas Iyer recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Rochester Mayo senior Blake Thackeray at No. 4 singles.

Rochester Mayo, the Class AA champion in 2011, finished the season 17-2. Both losses were to Wayzata.
