Spotlight
Class A
- Blake returned to the Class A field a year ago and left the Girls Tennis State Tournament with a team championship following a victory over top-seeded Rochester Lourdes in the title match. It was the Bears’ 14th state championship, all at the Class A level. Blake is favored to add to its trophy collection this week. The Bears enter the state tournament battle tested with a 12-4 record. Each of those losses was to Class AA schools in the powerful Lake Conference: Edina (twice), Minnetonka and Wayzata. Edina is the No. 2 seed in the Class AA field this week. Crookston, the consolation winner a season ago, is the No. 2 seed followed by Litchfield, Pine City and St. James, respectively. Minnehaha Academy sophomore Chloe Alley is the top seed in the singles tournament. Last season, she paired with teammate Greta Johnson and placed second in the doubles competition. Blake sophomore Fatemeh Vang, part of the duo with her sister to win the Class A double last season, is the No. 2 seed. Looking for a player to watch in the Class A singles field? Don’t miss Crosby-Ironton junior Tori Oehrlein. The four-sport standout is ranked ninth in tennis and made school history when she won the Section 7A singles championship. She is considered one of the top basketball recruits in the country. Oehrlein also excels in track and field and softball.
Class AA
- In the past 28 seasons, Rochester Mayo qualified for the state tournament 27 times. In that span of dominance, the Spartans only cracked the top spot once, and that was a season ago. In fact, a year ago was a sweep of championships for the Spartans as they won the team crown and claimed individual titles in singles and doubles. Could a repeat of dominance be in store this week? As a team, Rochester Mayo is 22-0 this season. No opponent has come closer than a 5-2 deficit. Included in that run were two victories over Edina, the No. 2 seed in the tournament. For their first championship in 2023, the Spartans raced past Edina by a 6-1 advantage. Senior Claire Loftus is the returning Class AA champion and the top seed to repeat. Her sister, Aoife, a sophomore, is seeded second. Sophomore Malea Diehn is ranked seventh in Minnesota, but she will play with senior Keely Ryder as the top-seeded doubles duo. A year ago, Ryder paired with Malea Vang to win the Class AA doubles championship.
