2024 Lacrosse State Tournament: Girls Day 1 Recap

Four girls lacrosse quarterfinals were played at Chaska High School on Tuesday, June 11 and the semifinal field is set for Thursday, June 13. No. 3 Benilde-St. Margaret’s will take on No. 2 Prior Lake and No. 4 Stillwater Area will face off against top-seeded Lakeville South.

The defending champions from Benilde-St. Margaret’s defeated Elk River/Zimmerman 10-15 in the first quarterfinal. Senior Julia Evens paced the Red Knights’ offense with six goals. Senior Maddie Kaltsas added two goals and one assist for Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

Prior Lake got three goals apiece from three different players as the Lakers cruised to a 16-4 victory over Andover. Senior Kayleigh Sandell totaled three goals and three assists and senior Sadie Chappuis added three goals and two assists. Junior Talia Baldzicki rounded out the trio of top scorers with three goals.  

In the third match-up of the day, Stillwater Area defeated Minnetonka 18-5. Ninth-grader Jacklynn Richert led the Ponies with four goals and three assists. Seniors Cassidy Keykal and Maycie Neubauer added three goals apiece. 

Lakeville South dismissed Cretin-Derham Hall 17-4 in the final quarterfinal of the day. Senior Katie Grubbs paced the top-seeded Cougars with six goals. Senior Sivanna O’Brien added four goals and three assists.

The Red Knights of Benilde-St. Margaret’s are making their fourth consecutive and overall appearance and are looking for their second consecutive title. Prior Lake, which won previously in 2019 and 2021, returns to tournament action after a two-year absence. The Lakers are making their sixth appearance.

Stillwater Area is still searching for its first title. The Ponies are making their third consecutive appearance and 12th overall. Lakeville South returns for its fourth consecutive appearance and seventh overall. The Cougars won one previous title in 2022. Stillwater Area and Lakeville South played each other in the third-place game in 2023, with the Cougars winning 17-9.
