In its five previous appearances in the Minnesota State High School League’s Boys Soccer State Tournament, Holy Angels has been in a championship game four times. That needs to be updated.
The top-seeded Stars recorded a 2-0 victory over No. 4 Orono on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Senior forward Logan Ciresi scored in the 37th minute and junior midfielder William Ferrufino made it a two-goal advantage in the 51st minute. The victory, the second over Orono this season, puts the Stars (19-1-0) into the state championship game for the first time since 2021.
That season was the third time that Holy Angels was the state runner-up. The others were in 2000 and 2001. A lone championship came in 2019.
Opposite of Holy Angels on Championship Day is No. 2 seed Totino-Grace, a 2-0 winner over No. 3 Blake in the other semifinal. The Eagles are in a state championship game for the first time since winning the Class A crown in 2017. Other Class A championships came in 2002 and 2004, respectively. There also was a Class A runner-up finish in 2008.
Junior forward Siman Gelato scored for the Eagles (14-3-3) in the 33rd minute and another was tacked on in the 78th minute when junior forward Truett Dollins cashed in on a free kick opportunity from 20 yards.
