Cool and dry conditions paved the way for impressive performances on Day 2 of the Minnesota State High School League’s Boys and Girls Soccer State Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The final day of the quarterfinal round is Thursday and then the tournament moves to three days of semifinals and championship games next week at U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis.

Class A

  • No. 2 Providence 7, Concordia Academy 1: Junior forward Maddyn Greenway, who has scored more than 150 career goals, added three more and an assist to power the Lions past the Beacons at Spring Lake Park High School. Junior midfielder Tatum Janezich added two goals. Concordia Academy was making its state tournament debut.
  • No. 3 St. Charles 1, St. Paul Academy 0, OT: St. Charles gained a measure of revenge by dethroning the defending Class A champions behind a goal from junior forward Sophie Slavin in the extra session. A year ago, St. Paul Academy was the No. 4 seed and defeated St. Charles in the Class A championship game. The win by the Saints sets up a semifinal with Providence Academy on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.

Class AA

  • No. 5 Orono 2, Cloquet/Carlton 1, SO: After 80 minutes of regulation time and 20 more of overtime couldn’t break a 1-all tie, Orono used a 4-3 edge in the game-deciding shootout procedure to earn a spot in the Class AA semifinals against top-seeded Holy Angels. On Day 1, Holy Angels raced to a 5-0 victory over Byron. Senior forward Kali Schmidt scored for Orono in regulation time and senior midfielder Addison Sandman answered for Cloquet/Carlton with two minutes remaining.

Class AAA

  • No. 3 Edina 5, Duluth East 0: Edina completed the big-school quarterfinals with a shutout victory over Duluth East at Spring Lake Park High School. Sophomore midfielder Mikaela Caverly scored two goals for the Hornets. Next up for Edina, the defending Class AAA champion, is No. 2 East Ridge on Tuesday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Boys

  • No. 1 St. Paul Academy 2, St. Croix Prep 1, SO: St. Paul Academy kept its championship repeat hopes alive with a shootout victory over upset-minded St. Croix Prep at Farmington High School. The Spartans won the game-deciding shootout, 4-2. Junior midfielder Ethan Hoyos scored in the first half for St. Croix Prep and senior forward Rowan McLean answered in the second half for the Spartans.

Class AA

  • No. 2 Totino-Grace 6, St. Cloud Tech 0: Junior forward Siman Gelato scored two goals to help power the Eagles past the Tigers at Monticello High School. Next up for Totino-Grace is a semifinal matchup with Blake on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
  • No. 3 Blake 4, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 2: Blake forged that meeting with Totino-Grace after posting a two-goal victory at White Bear Lake High School. Senior forward Agustin Catoggio scored two goals to pace the Bears while senior forward Joseph Melloh added a goal and an assist.

Class AAA

  • No. 1 Minneapolis Washburn 3, Bemidji 0: Washburn, on a quest to become the first Minneapolis City Conference boys soccer team to capture a state championship, took another step toward that with a shutout victory at Monticello High School. Senior midfielder Ronan Selbo had a goal and an assist for the Millers, who now will face No. 4 Eagan on Wednesday in the first semifinal of the day. Eagan advanced as an overtime winner over No. 5 Woodbury on Tuesday.
