Spotlight

Boys

  • Class A --- St. Paul Academy returns as the two-time defending Class A champion and the team to beat this season. The Spartans are a six-time state champion and on a 10-game winning streak. St. Cloud Cathedral is the only undefeated team in the Class A field. The Crusaders have surrendered just 10 goals this season, including none in the postseason.  Rochester Lourdes is on a 10-game winning streak since its last loss, a 2-0 setback to Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa on Sept. 17. Breck returns for the first time since finishing as the Class A runner-up in 2015. Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa was the Class A runner-up to St. Paul Academy last season. St. Croix Prep defeated St. Paul Washington in the Section 4A championship game to earn a return berth for the first time since 2019.  Marshall School, Duluth used a 5-4 shootout win over Legacy Christian in the Section 7A final to earn a spot in the state tournament for the second consecutive season. Fridley topped Maranatha Christian Academy in the Section 5A championship game for the Tigers’ first state tournament berth since 2007.
  • Class AA --- Holy Angels earned the top seed on the strength of a 17-1-0 season. The only loss was a 1-0 setback to Wayzata, the Class AAA champion in 2023, on Sept. 14. Totino-Grace returns for the first time since winning the Class A title in 2017. The Eagles have won two other championships. Blake is a two-time Class A champion and twice a runner-up. The Bears’ only losses were during the Independent Metro Athletic Conference schedule. Orono was the runner-up to Hill-Murray in last season’s Class AA championship game. The Spartans have outscored the opposition 14-3 over the past four games. Mankato East ended a long state tournament dry spell with a 1-0 victory over Marshall in the Section 2AA championship game. The Cougars last qualified in 2012. Along with Mankato East, Northfield is the other Big 9 Conference school to qualify. The Raiders opened this season 1-5-2 but are 7-0-3 in the past month. St. Cloud Tech returns for the fourth consecutive season on the strength of a strong run during the Section 8AA tournament. Cloquet-Esko-Carlton won the Section 7 crown for the fourth consecutive season. After opening the season 1-3, the Lumberjacks are on a 14-game winning streak.
  • Class AAA --- Perhaps a prelude of things to come for Minneapolis Washburn this season was a 2-1 signature victory over Wayzata, the defending big-school champion, on Aug. 29. The Millers are attempting to become the first Minneapolis City Conference school to win a boys soccer championship since the event began in 1974. Maple Grove is looking to take the next step after finishing as the Class AAA runner-up in 2023. The Crimson are on a seven-game winning streak and face another undefeated opponent in Rochester Mayo in the quarterfinals. Minnetonka’s only blemish this season is a loss to Edina during the Lake Conference schedule. That setback, however, fueled motivation as the season progressed. The Skippers were the Class AA runner-up in 1999.  Eagan returns for the first time since 2015. The Wildcats are on a nine-game winning streak entering the state tournament. Woodbury, which finished third in the 2023 tournament, suffered its only loss in 2024 in the season opener.  Bemidji is the Section 8AAA champion for the first time. The Lumberjacks were the Class A runner-up in 2018. Joel Hoover of KBUN Radio in Bemidji is peerless as the Lumberjacks’ play-by-play announcer. Rochester Mayo returns for the third time in the past four seasons. The Spartans are on a five-game winning streak and have outscored the opposition 17-3 in that span. Andover returns for the third consecutive season after outlasting Blaine in the Section 7AAA championship game.

GIRLS

  • Class A --- Southwest Christian, which finished fourth in 2023, has been dominant this season and tagged as the team to beat in Class A. The Stars have given up just six goals this season and haven’t surrendered one since Sept. 17. Providence Academy was the top seed a year ago and ended up third. The Lions feature junior forward Maddyn Greenway, one of the most prolific scorers in not only soccer, but also basketball. St. Charles was the Class A runner-up to St. Paul Academy in 2023. St. Cloud Cathedral opened the season with a loss to Southwest Christian and ended the regular season with a loss to Providence Academy. The Crusaders could be on a path to meet either one of them again during the tournament. Second-year coach Abby Schneider is 27-7-2 over that span. Esko had a shootout victory over Marshall School, Duluth, to win the Section 7A crown. Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa is the Section 2A champion for the second consecutive season. The Wildcats are on a seven-game winning streak. Concordia Academy is making its state tournament debut after defeating St. Croix Prep in the Section 4A championship game. St. Paul Academy, the defending Class A champion, opened the season 1-6-2, but are 6-1 since Sept. 21.
  • Class AA --- Holy Angels earned the top seed on the strength of a one-loss season. That lone setback was to Wayzata, the top seed in the Class AAA field, on Sept. 7. The Stars were the Class AA runner-up last season and the champions in 2022. Mahtomedi is no stranger to a championship game. The Zephyrs have been in a championship game 12 times since 1997, and in 10 of those games, they have emerged victorious. Mankato East is making its third consecutive state tournament appearance following a 3-0 victory over crosstown rival, Mankato West, in the Section 2AA championship game. Cloquet-Esko-Carlton will make the familiar trip down Interstate 35 for the fourth consecutive season and fifth time since 2019. The Lumberjacks are 14-1-1 in their past 16 games. Orono returns for the first time since 2019 when it finished as the Class A runner-up for the third consecutive season. The Spartans are 6-1 in the past month. Byron returns for the first time since 2021 and second overall. The Bears are on a seven-game winning streak.  St. Francis defeated Zimmerman in the Section 6AA championship to return for the first time since 2021 and second overall. St. Cloud Tech topped Alexandria in the Section 8AA championship for a spot in the state tournament for the first time since 2001.
  • Class AAA --- As it has been for many state tournaments, Wayzata has the top seed and tagged as the team to beat in the big-school class. The Trojans, behind legendary head coach Tony Peszneker, have won seven state crowns. He has 561 career victories entering the state tournament. East Ridge is 8-0-1 since Sept. 19. The Raptors’ last state tournament trip was in 2017. Edina is the reigning Class AAA champion. The Hornets defeated Wayzata early this season and haven’t lost since a setback to Rosemount in the opener. Eagan and Lakeville North will meet in the quarterfinals. They played to a 2-2 draw during the South Suburban Conference season.  St. Michael-Albertville is the third Lake Conference school in the Class AAA tournament. The Knights open against Wayzata for the second consecutive season. During the conference schedule, Wayzata posted a 4-2 victory over STMA. The Knights are in the state tournament for the third consecutive season. Maple Grove, the big-school champion in 2019, is on a 10-game winning streak.  Duluth East is in the state tournament for the first since 2010. The Greyhounds are on a roll, winning 12 consecutive games.
