2024 Track and Field State Meet: Day 3 Recap

Day 3 of the Minnesota State High School League’s Track and Field State Meet was held on Saturday, June 8 at St. Michael-Albertville High School. Championship events were held in Class AA and Class AA as the track and season field season came to a close. 

Here is a look at some highlights from Day 3: 

  • In Class AAA Boys competition, Irondale senior Juriad Hughes was the star of the meet. He won the long jump for the second year in a row while also capturing gold medals in the 100 and 200 meters. He ended his high school career as the state record holder in the long jump and matched the best time in the 100.

  • Hughes was one of two all-time state record holders competing at state. Apple Valley senior Dwyne Brown Jr., who will run at the University of Minnesota, won the Class AAA 400 meters. Earlier this year, he set the state record in that event.

  • Among Class AA Girls, Providence Academy senior Brooke Hohenecker won the 100, 200 and 400. The Lions finished third among Class AA girls teams with 62 points. The title went to Alexandria with 79 points and Monticello was second with 68.5.

  • Fridley won the Class AA Boys team championship with a roster consisting of six athletes. Sophomore Lorenzo Hampton won the 300-meter hurdles and was seventh in the 110-meter hurdles; seniors Isaiah Watson and Fadel Johnson finished second and third in the long jump; and the Tigers’ quartet of Lex Korti, Tykeilan Hy Shaw-Moore, Cajrtez Cook Jr. and Hampton finished fourth in the 4x100 relay. Fridley finished with 59 points, two more than runner-up Mankato East.

  •  In Class AAA, the boys team title went to Rosemount with a 53-52 edge over Wayzata. Among Class AAA Girls, Minnetonka had 100 points with Wayzata in second at 87.
