The state’s best adapted floor hockey teams are set to take over Coon Rapids High School for the Minnesota State High School League’s state tournament on March 8-9. Both a CI and PI team champion will be crowned on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams that won in 2023 are looking to defend their titles: Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville in CI and Brainerd in PI.
Here is a snapshot of the 2024 Adapted Floor Hockey State Tournament that will be played this weekend:
CI Division
- Maple Grove (10-0-0) enters this year’s tournament as the top seed in the North Division. Dakota United (6-3-0) is the No. 4 seed in the South Division. These two teams did not meet during the regular season, but the Crimson defeated the Hawks 6-5 in last year’s third-place game.
- The New Prague/TCU/LSH/Belle Plaine/Jordan Trojans (7-1-0) and South Suburban Jets (5-5-0) met in early February this year, with the Trojans winning 11-4. New Prague/TCU/LSH/Belle Plaine/Jordan, the No. 2 seed in the South Division, is looking to improve on last year’s runner-up showing. South Suburban, the No. 3 seed in the North Division, did not qualify for the 2023 tournament.
- The Stillwater/Mahtomedi Ponies (7-2-0) claimed consolation honors last year while the St. Cloud Area Crush (9-1-0) fell in the consolation semifinals. Stillwater/Mahtomedi enters this year’s tournament as the No. 3 seed in the South Division and St. Cloud Area is the No. 2 seed in the North Division. The Ponies and Crush did meet during the regular season.
- The defending champions from Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville (8-0-0) are the top seed in the South Division this year. If they win, it will be their second consecutive and overall title. The Blazing Cats will face off against the Mankato Knights (6-4-0). Mankato, the No. 4 seed in the North Division, is making its first tournament appearance. The Blazing Cats defeated the Knights 17-0 in late January this year.
PI Division
- Top-seeded Robbinsdale/Hopkins/Mound Westonka (8-3-0) takes on No. 8 South Suburban (1-7-0) in the first quarterfinal. These teams met in the first game of the regular season with the Robins winning 8-0. Robbinsdale/Hopkins/Mound Westonka is looking to improve on last year’s third-place showing. South Suburban did not qualify for the 2023 tournament.
- Maple Grove (8-3-0), the No. 4 seed, is looking to defeat No. 5 Rochester (4-7-0) for a third time this season. The Crimson won the first two games 10-3 and 9-8, respectively. These same two teams met in the consolation final of last year’s tournament, with Maple Grove winning 9-8.
- In the third quarterfinal, the 2023 runners-up from Dakota United (9-1-1) will face off against St. Paul Humboldt (2-6-0). Humboldt, which fell in the consolation semifinals last year, is looking to avenge a 10-2 regular-season loss to Dakota United. Dakota United is the No. 2 seed this year and Humboldt is No. 7.
- The defending champions from Brainerd (6-1-1) enter this year’s tournament as the No. 3 seed. If the Warriors win, it would be their fourth championship under this name. In addition to last year, they also won in 2018 and 2019. They also earned one additional championship as Brainerd/Pillager in 2017. No. 6 seed Minneapolis South (3-5-0) fell in the consolation semifinals of the 2023 tournament. Brainerd and Minneapolis met in early January this year, with the Warriors winning 10-4.
