Cherry’s postseason scoring average was bound to go down as the tournament progressed. But it didn’t diminish much after the first round of the Boys Basketball State Tournament.
The top-seeded, reigning champion Tigers got 32 points — including a pair of dunks and perfect 10-for-10 free-throw shooting — from Noah Sundquist and 23 from Noah Asuma in an 89-57 victory over No. 8 BOLD in a Class A quarterfinal game at Target Center on Thursday.
Cherry (30-1) came into the game averaging 93.3 points in the postseason. The Tigers have scored more than 100 points in five games since February.
Will Penkert led BOLD (20-11) with 23 points. Jack Gross scored his 2,000th career point on a free throw in the second half and finished with 13 in the game.
Up next: Cherry returns to the semifinals Friday at noon against the Henning-Nevis winner at Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota campus. BOLD plays in a consolation game at the same time at Gangelhoff Center on the Concordia University campus in St. Paul.
