It’s been four seasons since Maple Grove last was in the Class AAAA Boys Basketball State Tournament. The No. 4-seeded Crimson have waited long enough and it showed in their 74-51 victory over No. 5 Apple Valley in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 18 at Target Center.
The Crimson (22-8), one of three schools from the Northwest Suburban Conference in the tournament, took control early and then used a game-deciding surge to get past the Eagles (23-7).
Senior guard Keegan Harney scored 24 points and senior post Nathan Hromodka added 23 to power the Crimson into the semifinals where they will face No. 1 Cretin-Derham Hall on Thursday night at Williams Arena.
Maple Grove built a modest four-point lead at the half and that grew to eight, 46-38, with 10 minutes remaining in the second half. What followed was a 16-0 run that created a 62-38 advantage. Hromodka had eight points in the run.
Junior guard Camare Young scored 22 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had two assists to lead the Eagles, who are making their first state tournament trip since finishing as the Class AAAA runner-up in 2018. Junior guard Trey Parker added 10 points.
