Boys Basketball 2025: Waseca completes stunning rally to sidestep upset bid

With just more than a minute remaining in regulation time on Tuesday, March 18, it appeared No. 2-seeded Waseca was on the verge of being derailed in the Class AA Boys Basketball State Tournament and heading to the consolation side of the bracket.
The undefeated Blue Jays didn’t figure to stay that way. They trailed by four points to No. 7 Pequot Lakes, which was making key shots down the stretch and appeared poised to pull off the first upset of the quarterfinals.
But in a dizzying 64-second span, Waseca went on an eight-point run that prevented the upset and kept them undefeated with a 49-45 victory at Target Center. In a combination of full-court pressure that created turnovers, five successful free throws and a dagger-type three-pointer by senior guard Carson Ohnstad, the Bluejays (31-0) found a way to escape and earn a spot in the Class AA semifinals on Friday night at Williams Arena.
Senior guard Damarius Russell finished with 16 points, including three free throws in the decisive run. Junior guard added Deron Russell added 13 points.
Senior forward Harrison Keenen scored 10 points and had eight rebounds for the Patriots (23-8), who scored their final points with 1:56 left in regulation.
