After a scoreless first period, two Moorhead players hit the pipe on a power play attempt midway through the second. Sophomore forward Harper Bentz made sure the third shot counted, however, burying the Spuds’ 11th power-play goal of the year after a brief scramble in front of the Lakeville South net. Sophomore defensemen Joe Gramer and Joe Schiller were credited with the assists.
Lakeville South (19-0-2) roared back in the third period, tallying three goals in just over three minutes. Sophomore forward Aidan Willis book-ended the drive, scoring his first after catching a perfect pass from sophomore forward Ashton Dahms in the left circle at 5:09. Willis’ second goal came at 8:20 after some nifty passing between senior forward Cade Ahrenholz and junior forward Ben Portner. Sophomore forward Tanner Ludtke accounted for the Cougars’ second goal. That one came on a rebound in front of the net, with assists coming from Dahms and senior defenseman Jack Malinski.
Lakeville South and Moorhead traded goals in the final minute of the game. Ludtke struck for his second goal of the game on an empty net and Moorhead senior forward Jonas Spicer concluded the scoring at 16:33.
The Cougars advance with the 4-2 victory to face Wayzata in the semifinals. That game is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 2. Moorhead finishes its season at 13-8-1.
