St. Thomas Academy improved on last year’s runner-up showing to earn its 16th team title with 273 points at the 2025 Boys Swimming and Diving State Meet. The Cadets banished the eight-time defending champions, from Breck/Blake to a third place showing. Northfield finished second with 253 points and Blake/Breck followed at 212.

In addition to this year, the Cadets also won in 1995, 1999-2003, 2005-2008 and 2012-2016.

St. Thomas Academy won three events on its way to the championship. Junior Luke Mechtel won the 50 freestyle (20.93) and the 100 breaststroke (55.05). He also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:32.51). Seniors Sherman Holmstadt and Dane Dow and junior Kaden Greeley completed that squad.

Northfield also won three events in the Class A competition. Junior Will Redetzke captured the top spot in the 500 freestyle (4:37.09) and also competed on the winning 200 freestyle (1:26,41) and 400 freestyle (3:10.89) relay teams.

Seniors Peyton Truman and Nick Scheglowski and sophomore Odin Bergs rounded out the 200 team, while Scheglowski, junior Will Udelhofen and senior Josh Kraby completed the 400 team.

Henry Webb, a senior from Breck/Blake, captured his third consecutive gold medal in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:36.70. Webb also won the 100 freestyle in 44.71

Mankato East junior Elliot Bartell was the only other competitor to win a second consecutive gold medal. He took top honors in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.91, which was a Class A state meet record.
