Rosemount 4, Lakeville North 3, OT
In the second overtime game of tournament week in St. Paul, Rosemount (16-11-2) charted a 4-3 victory over Lakeville North (21-9-0) in the Class AA Girls Hockey State Tournament consolation semifinals on Friday, Feb. 24 at the TRIA Rink at Treasure Island Center in St. Paul.
The Irish scored the game winner at 5:35 of the second overtime session to punch their ticket to the consolation championship game.
Despite being outshot 19-3 in the first period, Rosemount gained a 1-0 lead early in the contest at 8:21of the first period with a goal by Cecilia Hanson. Assists on the play were added by Sophie Stramel and Zoe Juncker.
Rosemount stretched its lead to 2-0 with a power play goal at 14:58 in the second period by Anna Shandorf, which included assists from Aubrey Hansen and Hanson. Just under two minutes later, Lakeville North broke into the scoring column with a power play goal of its own as Addison Bowlby scored at 16:48 with a solo assist to Shay Swanson.
In the third period, the Panthers took the upper hand with Bowlby’s second goal of the day at 8:34. Bowlby hit on the unassisted goal with a shot from the left circle’s face-off dot. Lakeville North took a 3-2 lead at 11:56 of the third period with another goal by Bowlby that was assisted by Alexa Ruppert. On the hat trick goal, Bowlby took the puck from right to left and scored on a slick top shelf back hander from the left circle.
To send the game to overtime, Rosemount tied the contest at 14:48 of the third on a goal by Sophie Strammel. On a play that was set up on a pass from Hanson, Strammel connected on a one-timer from her spot in front of the Lakeville North net.
After a scoreless first overtime session that saw Rosemount outshoot Lakeville North 5-0, the Irish claimed the victory with a goal in the second overtime at 5:35 by Annalee Holzer. The unassisted goal saw Holzer score on a shot from the top of the right circle that made the final 4-3.
Natalie Kendhammer was the winning goalie for Rosemount as she made 43 saves in the game and helped the Irish offset a 46-27 shots on goal margin by Lakeville North. Addie Oettinger was the goalie of record for Lakeville North with 23 saves in the game.
On the power play, Rosemount was 1-of-3 and Lakeville North was 1-of-4.
Moorhead 6, Centennial/Spring Lake Park 2
In a game highlighted by special teams play, Moorhead (21-9) charted a 6-2 victory over Centennial/Spring Lake Park (21-8-1) in the Class AA Girls Hockey State Tournament consolation bracket semifinals on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Tria RINK at Treasure Island Center in St. Paul.
Moorhead opened the game’s scoring in the first period with an unassisted power play goal by Kate Kosobud at 10:03. The goal highlighted a strong open for the Spuds, which outshot the Cougars 22-5 in the first period.
Centennial/Spring Lake Park then tied the contest at 1-1 with a power play goal at 8:11 of the second period. The unassisted marker for the Cougars was scored by Hannah Thompson.
With the score tied at 1-1, Moorhead gained the upper hand in the contest with a pair of goals in the opening two minutes of the third period. On the power play advantage again, Moorhead’s Bria Holm scored at 1:10 of the third period with a solo assist from Kosobud. The Spuds then pushed their lead to 3-1 with a tally by Ella Holm at 1:48 with an assist going to Olivia Dronen.
Special teams continued to come into play later third period as Centennia/Spring Lake Parkl narrowed the gap to 3-2 with a power play goal by Lauren O’Hara that included an assist from Grace Laager at 4:47.
Moorhead padded its lead to 4-2 on another power play goal at 7:05 of the third as Taylor Brueske scored on the advantage with assists from Ella Holm and Bria Holm.
In the closing minutes of play, Centennial/Spring Lake Park pulled its goalie during a power play situation but the result proved to be a shorthanded goal for the Spuds as Kosobud scored her second goal of the game on an unassisted empty net goal at 15:48 that made it 5-2.
Moorhead completed the game’s scoring at 16:26 with another shorthanded goal as Addie Salvevold scored with assists from Elle Lebahn and Haylee Melquist.
The Spuds outshot Centennial/Spring Lake Park 51-20 in a game that was highlighted by special teams play. On the power play, Moorhead was 3-of-9 and Centennial/Spring Lake Park was 2-of-6. The game featured five power play goals and two shorthanded goals. Goalie Taylor Kressin had 18 saves in the win for Moorhead, while Kaitlin Groess made 45 saves in goal for the Cougars.
