Boys Hockey State Tournament hits the ice this week

Mahtomedi finished its season on a winning note with a 4-2 victory over Alexandria Area in the third-place game of the Class A Boys Hockey State Tournament on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Eight different players figured into the scoring for Mahtomedi (18-12-1). Junior defenseman Cavanaugh Bruner led the way with three points on a goal and two assists. Junior center Seth Nelson also had more than a point with a goal and an assist.

Alexandria (20-82) had much of the early momentum, getting a goal from senior wing Brycen Berg less than three minutes into the game. He was assisted by sophomore wing Gage Castle and junior center Tyler Kludt on the play.

The Zephyrs, however, turned that momentum late in the first period, with a frenzy of scoring, tallying three goals within the span of a minute. Senior forward Nicholas Beiersdorf got the scoring going, finishing a pass from Nelson to tie it up. Less than 30 seconds later, Bruner found the back of the net followed by a goal from junior forward Jonathon Grove in providing the Zephyrs a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.
