Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta, Rockford capture team titles

Class A Boys
In the first Class A session of the day, Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta earned a narrow four-point victory over Plainview-Elgin-Millville. Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta finished at 42 and P-E-M had 38. Perham was third with 35 points.
This was Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta’s first team title as a combined program. Morris Area earned one previous championship in 1998.
Three champions from 2019 struck gold again this year. Peyton Gunnarson of Lewiston-Altura repeated as the wheelchair champion in the 100 meter with a new Class A record of 16.24. Gunnarson also claimed the top spot in the 200 meter (29.80), the 800 meter (2:01.58) and shot put (18-7.75). His time in the 800 was also a Class A record.
Plainview-Elgin-Millville senior Kyler Bade was the second repeat winner from 2019. He defended his title in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.63. Senior Jason Ekiyor of Providence Academy was the final competitor to repeat. His winning time in the 110 hurdles was 14.51.
Pine Island junior Jarod White was the only athlete to set an all-time record in the morning session. He set the new standard in the pole vault at 15-9.
Class A Girls
In the girls event, Annandale senior Nyalaam Jok set the Class A and all-time state meet record in the high jump at 6-0. Jok also captured top honors in the long jump with a distance of 20-00.50.
Three additional competitors won multiple titles. Emily Sullivan, a junior from LeSueur-Henderson won three of the wheelchair events. She earned gold in the shot put (12-7), the 100 meter (38.55) and the 200 meter (1:15.89).
Junior Anisa Thompson of The Blake School, junior Shaina Zinter of Concordia Academy and junior Grace Drietz of Canby/Minneota were the final competitors to capture two titles apiece. Thompson repeated as the champion in the 200 meter dash (25.46) and won her first title in the 100 meter dash (12.23). Zinter won both the 100 meter hurdles (14.29) and 300 meter hurdles (43.51), and Drietz came in first in the 800 meter (2:17.36) and the 1600 meter (5:00.45).
Two teams were successful in defending their relay crowns. The 4x200 team from Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland/Southland (GMLOKS) earned it third consecutive crown with a time of 1:44.41. That team was made up of junior Anna Oehlke, senior Hailey Hindt, eighth-grader Chantle Reiland and sophomore Anika Reiland.
The Luverne Cardinals went home with their second consecutive relay championship. The team of senior Regan Feit, sophomore Tiana Lais, freshman Jenna DeBates and junior Tenley Nelson won the 4x800 with a time of 9:34.65.
In the team event, the Rockford Rockets defeated the runners-up from Annandale by four points. Rockford finished at 46 and Annandale came in with 42. The co-op of GMLOKS placed third with 39 points.
