It took extra time on Saturday, Nov. 12, but Mahtomedi reversed the only loss of its season with a 20-14 overtime victory over St. Thomas Academy in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals at Woodbury High School. And it only seemed appropriate that the football was in the hands of senior Corey Bohmert at the most crucial moment of Mahtomedi’s victory.

Bohmert’s 46th carry of the game was a 1-yard run on 4th-and-goal on Mahtomedi’s overtime possession. He bulled his way through the left side and over goal line for just his third touchdown, but also the edge the Zephyrs needed to get past the Cadets. Bohmert had each of the four touches on Mahtomedi’s overtime plays. His first carry went for six yards, the second for one yard the third down carry for two yards. While Mahtomedi missed the extra-point conversion kick, the defense, which included Bohmert at safety, drove St. Thomas Academy backward when the Cadets had their possession in overtime.

Bohmert had 276 yards rushing to send the Zephyrs (10-1) into the Class AAAAA semifinals against Elk River (11-0) on Friday, Nov. 18 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Elk River advanced with a 44-20 victory over Moorhead at Maple Grove High School.

On Oct. 7 in Week 6, St. Thomas Academy recorded a 28-14 victory over Mahtomedi in a Metro East Conference showdown of football powers.

In other games on the final day of the quarterfinals:

Rogers, the Section 6AAAAA champion, scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to wipe out a deficit and record a 34-23 victory over Robbinsdale Armstrong at Osseo. Anthony Powell started the spree with his third touchdown run of the game and Calvin Kolleh added another. Defensive lineman Thomas Dickerson capped the outburst with a 20-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
