Its 14-point lead erased, Minnehaha Academy went to work on the defensive end.
The No. 3 seed Redhawks held No. 6 Caledonia scoreless during a pivotal second-half stretch of nearly five minutes and held on for a 68-63 win Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Class AA Girls Basketball State Tournament at Maturi Pavilion on the University of Minnesota's campus.
Minnehaha Academy (21-9) built a 34-20 advantage late in the first half and went to the break ahead 37-26.
Caledonia (27-4) chipped away. Ashlyn Reinhart's tip-in of a missed free throw tied the score at 52 with 7:57 remaining. But its next basket came with 3:06 to go.
The answer on the offensive end wasn't a surprise for Minnehaha Academy. Senior guard Addison Mack scored six straight points to restore the Redhawks' lead and the Warriors only got as close as the final margin. Mack made 16 of 19 free throws and finished with a game-high 34 points, adding to the 4,000-plus she's totaled in her career.
Aubrie Klug tallied 25 points to lead Caledonia.
