The clutch shot didn’t fall for Morgan Mathiowetz at the end of the regulation. The Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s sophomore kept her head up and made the difference in overtime.

Mathiowetz stole the ball in the backcourt on consecutive possessions, spinning for a go-ahead turnaround shot in the lane and breaking free for a layup that keyed an 8-0 Saint Mary’s run.

No. 3 seed Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s held on to beat No. 6 Sacred Heart 65-61 in a Class A Girls Basketball State Tournament quarterfinal game Thursday night at Maturi Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus.

Mathiowetz's confidence to continue shooting was warranted. She piled up 30 points, including a stepback jumper with 1:04 left in regulation that put the Knights (30-2) ahead 48-46. Sacred Heart (24-7) had tied it with back-to-back corner 3-pointers from Ella Arntson and Leah Sundby, then got even again on Lexi Lawrence’s post move with 40 seconds to go. Mathiowetz’s final shot bounced off the rim and the Eagles couldn’t get off an attempt before the buzzer.

Mathiowetz also led the Knights with 15 rebounds. Lawrence had 27 points and 16 boards for the Eagles.

Up next: Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s faces No. 7 MACCRAY in Friday’s 2 p.m. semifinal at Williams Arena. Sacred Heart will play in a consolation game Friday at noon at Gangelhoff Center on the Concordia University campus in St. Paul.
