It was as close as expected for a Class A Girls Basketball State Tournament quarterfinal game between No. 5 and No. 4 seeds. And yet, only one team was ever in front.
No. 4 West Central Area swiftly put an end to a Cromwell-Wright rally with eight straight points after the Cardinals tied the score at 50, closing out a 61-54 victory Thursday at Maturi Pavilion on the University of Minnesota’s campus.
Leading 24-20 at halftime, the Knights (25-6) created some separation with a 9-0 run to take a 39-29 lead. But the Cardinals (25-5) chipped away and tied it with Isabella Anderson’s rebound and coast-to-coast layup with 2:43 to go. The game’s second deadlock was short-lived. Mya Foslien knocked down a 3-pointer on the next possession and the Knights put it away at the free throw line.
Foslien tallied 17 points and blocked four shots. Cromwell-Wright's Remington Olesiak scored a game-high 19 points.
Up next: West Central Area battles No. 1 Goodhue in a noon semifinal Friday at Williams Arena. Cromwell-Wright goes to the Concordia University campus in St. Paul for a 10 a.m. consolation game Friday against Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.
