Girls Gymnastics 2025: Detroit Lakes captures Class A team title

The Detroit Lakes Girls Gymnastics team began its 2024-2025 season with the afternoon of Feb. 21 in mind. The day the Lakers envisioned was realized Friday at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in downtown St. Paul when they captured the Class A Team State Championship with a team score of 145.625.

"It's just a big lift off our shoulders because we worked since the beginning of the season all the way up to now just to get this one thing," Detroit Lakes junior Maggie Schander said.

The Lakers' sixth championship wasn't a sure thing when competition began. Their score of 35.25 on the balance beam was their lowest of the four events. The bonds developed over the course of accomplishing their season-long goal helped them regroup.

"We're here for each other no matter what happens because we all are feeling the same thing: 'We're all stressed about this right now,'" Schander said. "Knowing we all have each other's backs no matter what happens, we know we love each other."

Detroit Lakes went on to post a 36.375 in floor exercise and Class A competition-best scores of 37.575 in vault and 36.425 in uneven bars to clinch the title over runner-up Monticello (144.775) and third-place Breck School (144.000).

It's the Lakers' first state championship since members of this team watched the program win five consecutive from 2015 to 2019.

"It's crazy watching what they did and knowing that we were able to pull off the same thing," Schander said.

Breck School posted the top balance beam score (36.875) and Monticello (36.575) had the top score in floor exercise.
