Posted: Tuesday, February 20, 2024 - 2:48 PM
The 2024 Gymnastics State Meet is scheduled for February 23-24 at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul. Teams will compete on Friday and the individual competition will take place on Saturday.
Here is a snapshot of the meet:
- A new team champion will emerge in each class. The defending Class AA champions from New Prague placed second to Prior Lake in the Section 2AA meet and Becker came out of Section 7A, ousting the defending champions from Big Lake.
- Two Class A individual champions return in search of more gold; North Branch Area junior Dakota Esget on the uneven bars and Perham/New York Mills senior Avery McAllister on the balance beam.
- St. Cloud’s Taylar Schaefer, who swept the Class AA events in 2022, graduated last spring. St. Michael-Albertville senior Jackie Bergeron and Cretin-Derham Hall junior Delaney Cunnington look like strong contenders for this year’s Class AA all-around crown. Bergeron won all five events at the 5AA Section meet and Cunnington claimed the top spot in four events at the 4AA Section meet.
- Melrose Area (Class A) leads all schools in state meet appearances. The Dutchmen are making their 27th appearance, but first since 2017. Forest Lake and East Ridge are both making their eighth appearances in Class AA. Forest Lake’s last appearance was in 2021 and East Ridge placed fifth in 2023.
