Key Things to Know
Class A
- An inaugural trip last season for Dodge County resulted in a runner-up finish to Warroad. This season, the Wildcats are the top seed. Senior forward Nora Carstensen has a team-best 51 points.
- River Lakes is a co-op of eight schools: Rocori, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, Albany, Eden Valley-Watkins, New London-Spicer, Paynesville Area and St. John’s Prep. The Stars’ 4-0 victory over Willmar in the Section 2A final earned a third trip to the state tournament in the past five seasons.
- Marshall opened the season with a 14-game winning streak. The Tigers are making their fourth trip to the state tournament and first since 2018.
- It took overtime in the Section 4A final, but Holy Angels was able to get past South St. Paul for a fourth state tournament appearance. The Stars won the Class A crown in 2005. Senior forward Taylor Lesnar paces the Stars with 41 points.
- Orono, the No. 2 seed in the Class A field, is seeking another shot at Dodge County. On Dec. 17, the Spartans were on the short end of a 2-1 outcome to Dodge County. If a rematch occurs, it will be for the Class A championship.
- Fergus Falls enters its three consecutive state tournament trip on a four-game winning streak. Junior forward Hannah Johnson paces a balanced attack with 38 points.
- Of the six losses on Proctor/Hermantown’s record this season, three are to Class AA schools and the other three are to higher seeds in the Class A field (Dodge County, Orono and Warroad). The Mirage are 5-0-1 in their past six games.
- The path to St. Paul is a familiar 357.3-mile journey for Warroad. The three-time defending Class A champions are seeking to become the first girls hockey team to record a four-peat of championships. Breck won three in a row from 2018-2020. This is Warroad’s 16th trip to the state tournament under head coach David Marvin. The Warriors have won five state championships and been the runner-up five times.
Class AA
- Farmington defeated Northfield 2-0 to capture the Section 1AA championship and a ninth trip to the state tournament. The Tigers were the Class A runner-up to Blake in 2007. Ninth-grade forward Jenna Goblirsch leads the way with 20 goals and 21 assists.
- This is an historic first trip to the state tournament for Holy Family Catholic. That came after another important first: Senior defender Maielle Schugel scored her first goal of the season in that overtime victory. It snapped a four-year losing streak to Minnetonka in the section final.
- Rosemount scored a single goal in its Region 3AA championship game with district rival, Eastview, but it was enough for a third consecutive trip to the state tournament and fourth overall.
- Hill-Murray, the Section 4AA champion and big-school runner-up a year ago, will play Andover for the third time this season. Andover recorded a 5-2 victory on Dec. 20, but Hill-Murray answered with a 2-1 victory a month later. Hill-Murray is on a nine-game winning streak. Sophomore forward Emily Pohl powers the Pioneers with 36 goals and 30 assists.
- Centennial/Spring Lake Park, the Section 5AA champion, spent a strong portion of the season as the top-ranked Class AA team. They opened the season with 14 consecutive victories before back-to-back losses to Orono and Holy Angels, respectively, two schools playing in the Class A field. Centennial/Spring Lake Park is currently on an 11-game winning streak. Senior forward Teagan Kulenkamp leads a powerful attack with 26 goals and 44 assists.
- Tradition-rich Edina is in a familiar spot as the top seed. The Hornets had three scattered losses during the regular season, but as they have in the past, appear to be peaking again during the postseason. Junior forward Lorelai Nelson leads three other teammates with at least 30 points. As productive as Edina is on offense, its forte is defense in giving up an average of just more than one goal per game.
- Andover has a victory over Edina to its credit this season. The Huskies were Class AA champions in 2020 and 2022, and the Class AA runner-up in 2021 and 2023. Senior forward Maya Engler paces the Huskies with 36 points.
- Moorhead had three consecutive losses near the end of the regular season, including a 2-1 setback in overtime to Roseau. But the Spuds turned that result around in a 6-1 victory over the Rams in the Section 8AA championship game. This is Moorhead’s fifth trip to the state tournament. Senior forward Olivia Kortan leads the Spuds with 46 points.
