Fresh snow was a welcome sight this past weekend to the participants and supporters of the two skiing state meet events that are held at Giants Ridge near Biwabik on Minnesota’s Iron Range. Behind the snow, however, is a forecast of arctic-like cold air that will impact the start of the Alpine Skiing State Meet on Tuesday, Feb 11.

The start of the first run for girls and boys participants will be delayed an hour and now take place at 11 a.m. The delay ensures safer temperatures for competition and allows for adjusted travel and preparations.

NSPN.tv, with the assistance of the Student Media Team at Rock Ridge High School, will livestream the day’s racing.

Here are key items to know from each of the girls and boys races, respectively:

Girls

  • Minnetonka, the defending team champion, returns after winning the Section 5 crown. The Skippers have won two of the past three state championships and five overall. Senior Stella Stinnett and ninth-grader Charlotte Kinzer are the Skippers’ top two skiers.
  • Hill-Murray, the team state champion in 2023, returns after winning the Section 4 title.
  • Blake senior Vivien Pihlstrom is the returning individual champion. A year ago, she was second after the first run and then topped the field on the second run to win the individual gold medal.
  • Hill-Murray junior Taylor Voigt, the individual champion in 2023, returns after not participating in last year’s state meet.
  • Look for Eagan senior Courtney Bumpers to contend for an individual crown. She was runner-up to Pihlstrom in 2024 by a margin of just more than a half second.

Boys

  • It could be a double dose of championships for Minnetonka. On the boys side, the Skippers were the runner-up and just three points behind Minneapolis Washburn in 2024. The Millers’ victory kept Minnetonka from a three-peat of Alpine crowns. Since 2017, Minnetonka has won four championships.
  • Eden Prairie senior Tate Wilker is the top returning placer from a year ago. He was fourth overall in 2024, just more than a second behind Irondale senior Anthony Petkov. One spot behind Wilker in 2024 was St. Thomas Academy’s Toren Piltingsrud, who is now a sophomore.
  • Minnetonka’s top skier is junior Oscar Anderson, who was eighth in 2024.
  • St. Thomas Academy head coach Nelson Carlson was a three-time individual state champion for the Cadets.
  • Did you know? When Northfield’s Elliott Boman won the individual championship in 2015, it was the first time a Member School south of the Twin Cities could celebrate having a skiing state champion.
