Mounds View advanced to a boys soccer championship game for the first time since 2006 following a 2-0 victory over Rochester Mayo in the Class AAA semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Senior forward Sam Hoyt scored in the 43rd minute and junior midfielder Simon Greer added the clincher with an open-net goal in the 79th minute to give the Mustangs (15-5-0) their fifth consecutive victory after ending the regular season with two losses. In five previous state championship game appearances, Mounds View won the single-class crown in 1977.
Hoyte opened the scoring on a shot from the edge of the penalty area that beat Rochester Mayo senior goalkeeper John Hobday to the near post. With time winding down and Rochester Mayo (15-4-0) applying offensive pressure, Hobday left the goal to become an added attacker. Off a Mayo corner kick, Mounds View won the ball back and found Greer who went on a dazzling 75-yard run with the ball to score into an empty goal.
Hobday finished with 13 saves as the Spartans had their 10-game winning streak snapped.
