In the late fall, Hopkins ninth-grader Logan Drevlow had little confidence that he would have an opportunity to ski in the Minnesota State High School League’s Nordic Skiing State Meet a few months later. He had two stress fractures in his femur that were taking their time in healing and the timetable didn’t appear favorable for competition.
Faith in the healing process paid off handsomely for Drevlow on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Giants Ridge when he zipped to the Boys Pursuit championship in a two-race combined time of 23 minutes, 36.2 seconds. He finished nearly 27 seconds ahead of Wayzata senior Daniel McCollor. It was the third time this season that Drevlow got the best of McCollor, first, in the Lake Conference and then at the section meet. McCollor spent part of January overseas competing at the U18 Nations events.
“This feels great; I didn’t even expect to be here,” Drevlow said. “It was really fast today.”
Drevlow recorded the fastest time in the classical race to start the day, finishing in a time of 12:31.2. Minnehaha Academy senior Finn Christiansen was second in the classical at 12:40.2 and McCollor third at 12:43.2. They went off for the freestyle in that order with Drevlow having a nine-second head start over Christensen based on his time in the first run. Drevlow had the fastest time in the classical, thus capturing the Pursuit crown, finishing in a time of 11:04.9. McCollor climbed to runner-up honors and Christiansen was third in 24:15.
Rounding out the top five were Bloomington Jefferson/Kennedy junior Anders Westmano and Mounds Park Academy junior Eddie Snider, in fourth and fifth, respectively.
A year ago, Drevlow finished 12th while McCollor was fifth.
