St. Paul Academy is one of the most successful boys soccer programs in Minnesota State High School League history.
Since 1980, six seasons after the first state tournament was played, the Spartans have qualified for the state tournament 17 times through 2012. In that span, St. Paul Academy captured four championships and had five runner-up finishes. But it has been a decade since St. Paul Academy has played in the state tournament, and on Friday, Nov. 4, the NO. 4-seeded Spartans were eager to add another chapter to the program’s storied history.
They did so with a 2-0 victory over unseeded St. Anthony in the Class A championship game late Friday at U.S. Bank Stadium.
St. Paul Academy built a two-goal advantage at the half.
Senior forward Cooper Bollinger-Danielson opened the scoring with 22:49 left in regulation when he slammed in a rebound with authority from close range. About eight minutes later, senior Nathan Cohen doubled the lead on a header off a corner kick.
St. Paul Academy finished the season on a 10-game winning streak. In those 10 games, the Spartans blanked the opposition eight times, including six shutouts in the postseason.
