Rosemount parlayed one goal and plenty of stingy defense into the school’s first girls soccer championship on Friday, Nov. 4, following a 1-0 victory over Edina in the Class AAA title game at U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis.
All-state senior midfielder Taylor Heimerl supplied the game’s only goal in the 16th minute on a short-range, left-footed shot set up by teammate Shay Payne, a senior forward, to send the No. 2-seeded Irish (21-1-0) to their historic title. In Rosemount’s only previous appearance in a girls soccer championship game, it lost to Centennial in the 2016 title match.
As they did in a semifinal victory over No. 3 Stillwater on Wednesday, Heimerl and Payne combined again on a crucial goal. This time, Payne returned the favor of her goal in the semifinals when she fed Heimerl with the state-title winning goal.
From there, Rosemount’s defense took over in limiting No. 5 Edina (16-5-1) to no shots on goal for the game. It was the 18th shutout of the season for Rosemount. Edina was seeking the 197th state championship in district history. Edina leads all Minnesota State High School League member schools with the bounty of state titles.
