Baseball State Tournaments set to begin this week

Baseball State Tournaments set to play this week at five venues

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. --- Thirty-two teams in four classifications will compete in the 2021 Minnesota State High School League’s Baseball State Tournaments this week. On June 15 and June 16, the quarterfinals and semifinals will be played at the following sites: Class A and Class AA, Joe Faber Field and Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud; Class AAA at the Mini Met in Jordan and Class AAAA at Chaska Athletic Park. The two finalists in each class will advance to the Prep Championship Series at Target Field in downtown Minneapolis on June 18. This will be the first state tournament held after a one-season hiatus when no events were held last spring during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Tuesday, June 15

Class A

Quarterfinals

·       Adrian-Ellsworth (14-12) vs. No. 1 Hayfield (23-0) at Faber Field, 9:30 a.m.

·       No. 5 Springfield (18-7) vs. No. 4 South Ridge (21-3) at Faber Field, 11:45 a.m.

·       Sebeka (16-8) vs. No. 2 New York Mills (21-2) at Putz Field, 10 a.m.

·       Fosston (19-6) vs. No. 3 Randolph (22-0) at Putz Field, 12:15 p.m.

Class AA

Quarterfinals

·       St. Agnes (17-7) vs. No. 1 Glencoe-Silver Lake (23-3) at Faber Field, 2:15 p.m.

·       No. 5 Plainview-Elgin-Millville (21-3) vs. No. 4 Wadena-Deer Creek (25-3) at Putz Field, 5 p.m.

·       Aitkin (21-5) vs. No. 2 Albany (22-3) at Putz Field, 2:45 p.m.

·       Belle Plaine (18-4) vs. No. 3 Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (22-2) at Putz Field, 7:15 p.m.

Class AAA

Quarterfinals, at Mini Met, Jordan

·       St. Thomas Academy (17-9) vs. No. 1 Willmar (22-2), 10 a.m.

·       No. 5 Grand Rapids (17-7) vs. No. 4 Marshall (17-6), 12:30 p.m.

·       Albert Lea (12-11) vs. No. 2 Sartell (21-3), 3 p.m.

·       Sauk Rapids-Rice (10-12) vs. No. 3 Mahtomedi (17-5), 5:30 p.m.

Class AAAA

Quarterfinals, at Chaska Athletic Park

·       Minnetonka (15-10) vs. No. 1 Stillwater (20-4), 10 a.m.

·       No. 5 Farmington (18-6) vs. No. 4 Mounds View (17-7), 12:30 p.m.

·       Rogers (18-7) vs. No. 2 Park (Cottage Grove) (20-7), 3 p.m.

·       Hopkins (16-8) vs. No. 3 Andover (21-4), 5:30 p.m.

Wednesday, June 16

Semifinals

Class A

Media Guidance

·       Photographers are not permitted to encroach on the fields of play.

·       Photographers must stay within designated shooting positions.

·       Media seating permitted in designated areas.

·       Onsite, in-person interviews are not permitted during the quarterfinals and semifinals at each site.

·       Onsite interviews will be permitted following the championship games at Target Field.

·       League Staff at all sites will be on hand for additional media guidance.

2019 champions

·       Class A --- BOLD

·       Class AA --- Duluth Marshall

·       Class AAA --- St. Thomas Academy

·       Class AAAA --- East Ridge

Briefly:

·       Three schools from the Suburban East Conference are seeded within the top four in Class AAAA: No. 1 Stillwater, No. 2 Park and No. 4 Mounds View. Stillwater was the Class AAAA champion in 2018. Mounds View won back-to-back big-school crowns in 2013 and 2104. Park placed third in 1993.

·       Mounds View’s Will Rogers, a senior catcher, will play at Arizona State. Park’s Tucker Novotny, a senior pitcher, will play for Minnesota.

·       Farmington is making its first state tournament appearance since 1977.

·       Albert Lea is making its first state tournament appearance since 1969.
