Top-seeded Benilde-St. Margaret’s played the part of team to beat by cruising to a 3-0 victory over Cloquet-Carlton in the Class AA semifinals of the Girls Soccer State Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Sophomore midfielder Kiya Gilliand scored a goal in each half to send the undefeated Red Knights (18-0-1) into a championship game for the first time since 2016 when they won the Class A title. It will be the eighth appearance for Benilde-St. Margaret’s in a championship game since 2005. In that span, the Red Knights have won four championships and were the runner-up three other times.
Senior midfielder Elizabeth Dietzen opened the scoring in the 25th minute off a scramble in front of the goal. Gilliand doubled the Red Knights’ lead at the break when she swept a shot over Cloquet-Carlton junior goalkeeper Katelyn Olson. With 12 minutes remaining in regulation, Gilliand capped the scoring on a rebound into an open goal.
Cloquet-Carlton (17-3-0) generated five shots on goal.
