The Mahtomedi girls soccer team has once again found themselves in a familiar place: A championship game. The No. 3-seeded Zephyrs advanced to a girls soccer championship game for the 11th time since 1997 with a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Holy Angels in the Class AA semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Mahtomedi scored two goals five minutes apart in the first half to turn what had been a deficit into a berth in the title game opposite top-seeded Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Saturday.
Sophomore forward Audrey Garton gave Holy Angels (14-3-2) the lead in the 16th minute on a goal from the left side. Four minutes later, Mahtomedi found the equalizer on a goal from senior forward Audrey Barry. She scored after receiving a diagonal pass from teammate Lauren Coy, a sophomore midfielder, and giving a one-touch into the goal. Not long after the cheering had died down from that goal, Mahtomedi took the lead for good on a goal from senior midfielder Cambelle Waldspurger, who curled it perfectly after a corner kick.
Mahtomedi, the Class A champion in 2019, has a state-best nine championships in 10 title-game appearances. Mahtomedi’s last loss was a 7-0 setback to Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Sept. 18.
