Boys Basketball 2025: Breck gallops past Montevideo and into semifinals

Breck finished out a full day and evening of Class AAAA and Class AA quarterfinals in convincing fashion, posting a 73-49 victory over Montevideo in the final Class AA quarterfinal in the Minnesota State High School League’s Boys Basketball State Tournament on Tuesday, March 18 at Target Center.
The Mustangs (20-10), the defending Class AA champion and No. 3 seed this week, outscored No. 6 Montevideo (25-5) by 12 points in each half.
Sophomore guard Waleed Muhammed scored 18 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field to send the Mustangs into the semifinals against No. 2 Waseca, which survived an upset scare earlier in the evening. Senior guard Miles Newton contributed 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
Montevideo led by seven points with six minutes elapsed in the first half. But Breck responded with an 11-point run six minutes later to build a 42-30 advantage at the break. Breck scored 46 points in the paint compared to 24 for Montevideo. Breck also had a 10-point edge in points off turnovers, 19-9.
Junior guard Brody Dack paced the Thunder Hawks with 13 points and senior guard Gannon Reidinger added 12 points, six rebounds and four steals. Montevideo is making its first state tournament appearance since 2009.
