It provoked the loudest reaction of the game from the Cretin-Derham Hall fans. It gave the Raiders a lead they didn’t relinquish. It was Sage Gilbert’s four-point play with 10:16 remaining that was the key play during a back-and-forth second half of runs.

Gilbert’s big shot and ensuing free throw was part of a 12-0 surge that gave No. 7 seed Cretin-Derham Hall a 40-34 lead in an eventual 59-50 victory No. 2 Monticello in a Girls Basketball State Tournament Class AAA quarterfinal game Wednesday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion on the University of Minnesota’s campus.

Gilbert hit another 3 on the next possession and was 4-of-7 from long range on her way to a game-high 17 points for the Raiders (21-9). Madeleine Hamiel added 15 points, including a 3-pointer that brought Cretin-Derham Hall within one before Gilbert’s seven-point flurry.

Monticello (29-1) responded, forcing a Cretin-Derham Hall timeout after an 8-1 spurt cut the lead to 46-45 with 3:55 remaining. But the Raiders never gave up the advantage and ended the game on a clinching 8-1 run of their own that included a pair of steals for breakaway layups.

Parker Haffeman led the Magic with 12 points.

Cretin-Derham Hall led 26-25 after a first half that featured nine lead changes.
