Eastview opened its season with two losses to Wayzata and Providence Academy. There’s only been one loss since and that has been part of a 26-1 run since Nov. 29.
That spree continued on Wednesday, March 12 when the No. 2-seeded Lightning posted a 62-39 victory over No. 7 Anoka in the third Class AAAA quarterfinal of the Minnesota State High School League’s Girls Basketball State Tournament at Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota campus.
Junior guards Alexandra Mathews and Clara Goodman scored 13 points each to propel the Lightning (26-3). Senior guard Myah Maull chipped in 12 points.
Eastview is the second school from the South Suburban Conference to advance to the Class AAAA semifinals. One game earlier, No. 4 Lakeville North defeated No. 5 Brainerd to advance to the upper-bracket semifinal against No. 1 Maple Grove.
In the semifinals, the Lightning will face the winner of the final Class AAAA quarterfinal between No. 3 Hopkins and No. 6 Chaska. Eastview recorded a 68-61 victory over Hopkins on Dec. 4.
Anoka (20-9), the Section 7AAAA champion, had its winning streak stopped at four. Junior center Deborah Ayeni scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while junior forward Maddy Freking added 10 points.
The Tornadoes will play the loser of the final Class AAAA quarterfinal in the consolation semifinals at the Gangelhoff Center on the Concordia (St. Paul) campus.
