History is just two victories away for Providence Academy.
The top-seeded Lions, considered the best high school girls basketball team in the state this season regardless of enrollment classification, rolled to an 84-50 victory over No. 8 New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva in the Class AA quarterfinals of the Minnesota State High School League’s Girls Basketball State Tournament on Wednesday, March 12 at Williams Arena.
Providence Academy is the three-time defending Class AA champion and is seeking to become Minnesota’s first girls basketball team to win four consecutive crowns.
To no one’s surprise, junior guard Maddyn Greenway led the way, this time with a triple double. The University of Kentucky commit scored 29 points, dished out 12 assists and grabbed 10 rebounds to power the Lions (30-0).
With a made three-pointer from the corner and just under three minutes remaining in regulation time, Greenway scored her final basket of the game and became the all-time career record holder for points in a state tournament. Former New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva and University of Minnesota standout Carlie Wagner set the previous mark of 317 in 2014.
Senior forward Hope Counts added 11 points to go with seven steals. Sophomore guard Emma Millerbernd scored 18 points for the Lions who advance to the Class AA semifinals on Friday night against the winner of the late quarterfinal between No. 4 Sauk Centre and No. 5 Minnewaska Area.
Sophomore center Kylie Olson had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers (23-6).
