Maple Grove’s first step as a top seed went according to its plan as the Crimson cruised to a 71-36 victory over No. 8 White Bear Lake in the first Class AAAA quarterfinal of the Minnesota State High School League’s Girls Basketball State Tournament on Wednesday, March 12 at Williams Arena.

Senior guard Jordan Ode, a Michigan State recruit, scored 17 of her 27 points in the second half to send the Crimson (27-2) into the semifinals for the second consecutive season. Senior guard Lexi Hanna had 14 of her 17 points in the first half when Maple Grove built a 34-22 advantage.

White Bear Lake (20-10), the Section 4AAAA champion, struggled out of the gate and didn’t score its first basket until there were nearly six minutes elapsed. But the Bears chipped away and moved to within 12 points at the half.

Senior forward Elise Dieterle paced the Bears with 18 points.

Maple Grove, which placed fourth last season, advances to the Class AAAA semifinals on Thursday night where it will face the winner of the second quarterfinal between No. 5 Brainerd and No. 4 Lakeville North.

The loser of that second quarterfinal moves on to play White Bear Lake in the consolation semifinals on Thursday morning at the Gangelhoff Center on the Concordia (St. Paul) campus.
